What's it like to visit?
Enjoy a circular walk through the woodland. There is a mown path through the meadow which offers fantastic views over the pools. We will be improving and managing the reserve so look out for changes as the site develops! With 43 different birds, 19 species of butterfly and 27 different types of fungi found here there is always lots to see. Between the hazel, holly, ivy and elder, flowers pop up - from bluebells to wood anemone, wood avens to honeysuckle.
What is there to do?
- Build a den or shelter in the woods
- Discover animal tracks and signs
- Spot woodland butterflies
- Find funky fungi
- Admire the stunning views
- Listen to birdsong
- Identify wildflowers
- Historic landscape
The wood has been here since at least 1600 and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 listed as 2 furlongs long and two furlongs wide (approximately 16 hectares which is about 12 football pitches). The Dunsmore Living Landscape will link up Wappenbury and Ryton woods with stretches of woods and hedgerows. A vital part of the project is reconnecting local communities with the landscape and its rich heritage.
How to get here
Off the A445, follow Paget's Lane and turn right at the fork. The car park is 200m along the lane, on the right. Please take care along the narrow lane and follow the signs. Please respect our neighbours and ensure you do not block passing places, gateways or turn on their driveways. There is a small members’ car park which is locked and can be used by members who should have the members combination code. Please note the postcode will take you towards Bubbenhall Village. Please refer to the directions above.
Thanks to...
The National Lottery Heritage Fund, WREN’s FCC Biodiversity Action Fund and the Banister Charitable Trust provided generous grants towards this purchase. We would also like to thank the families of the people who have left gifts in their wills for the purchase of new nature reserves. In addition, we thank our many generous supporters who made donations allowing us to buy this wonderful wood and meadow.
